We are gearing up for Friday’s cold temperatures (9° to 20°F) and would like to encourage families to be proactive as well.
If the forecasted temperatures are correct, we will have indoor recesses at the elementary schools; middle school students will remain in the cafeteria during lunches.
Please dress students in extra layers of outerwear, including jackets, hats, gloves, and extra socks, to keep them warm and comfortable during transitions between buildings or while they’re waiting for the bus.
With a lot of young drivers at State Street and Sedro-Woolley High Schools, we also want to remind families to remind their teens to prioritize safety while driving to and from school, especially in potentially icy conditions.
The district’s transportation team will also be checking road conditions before the first buses leave the bus garage at 6 a.m. If conditions warrant a two-hour late start, families will be notified via FlashAlert, Facebook, the District Website as well as School Messenger messages via email, text and voice.

Mark your calendars now to join the next "Coffee and Conversation" meeting on Thursday, January 25, 2024, at 9:45 a.m., at the District Office (801 Trail Road).
Bring your interests, comments, celebrations and concerns related to the district as a whole to chat over coffee. This will be an informal meeting and a time for the superintendent and other district leaders to make themselves available to you.
If you have specific questions or concerns related to your students, we encourage you to reach out to your student's school. They are always willing and happy to hear your concerns.

All classes will resume at State Street High School tomorrow, Thursday, January 11, 2024. PSE was able to restore power and clean up the debris in the parking lot.
All students should report to SSHS at regular time tomorrow morning. If you have any questions, please reach out to the school at 360-855-3550 or the district office at 360-855-3500.

Sedro-Woolley School District will be closed in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 15, 2024. School will resume on Tuesday, January 16.

Don't forget, all schools will start one hour late tomorrow so staff can participate in professional development!
CMS: 8:40 a.m.
SWHS: 8:55 a.m.
SSHS: 9:00 a.m.
Elementary: 10:25 a.m.

No school today at State Street High School (January 9, 2024) because of downed trees and no power. All other schools are starting on time.
State Street High School classes will be held at the Discovery Center next door to Evergreen, 1103 McGarigle Rd, Sedro-Woolley, WA 98284 on Wednesday, January 10, 2024.
For students who normally walk to SSHS, a van will be available to shuttle students every 20 minutes starting at 8 a.m. The last shuttle will run at 9 a.m. The van capacity is 8 people, so staggered arrivals are encouraged.
Those who normally ride buses will be dropped off at Discovery Center via the Evergreen bus loop.
Student drivers should park at Cascade Middle School (please park in the back two rows closest to the Boys & Girls Club) and walk to the Discovery Center. Please do not park at Evergreen (there is not enough parking for SSHS students to park on site).
Transportation to and from NCTA will be as normal, but departing from the Discovery Center in the afternoon. The morning Mount Vernon NCTA bus will depart from Sedro-Woolley High School at 7:38 a.m.; the Anacortes NCTA bus will depart at 7:10 a.m.
For transportation-related questions, please call 360-855-3504. For other questions, please call the district office at 360-855-3500.
Since it's late-start Wednesday, school will start at 9 a.m.
Breakfast and lunch will still be available.

Meet our Staff: Joni McSpadden
In the bustling halls of Sedro-Woolley High School, there's a familiar face that has become synonymous with dedication, passion and resilience.
Joni McSpadden, an English teacher with an illustrious 18-year tenure at SWHS, is an inspiration for both students and colleagues alike.
Joni is deeply intertwined within the fabric of Sedro-Woolley. Growing up in our tight-knit community, she found her calling early on.
"I thought I would teach elementary school, but I knew from the time I was very little that I would be a teacher," she said.
She earned a BA in Education from WWU before landing back home in Woolley.
"I couldn't imagine teaching anywhere else,” she said. “This was the only district I wanted to be in."
Joni's heart has always been in education, proven by earning National Board certification in 2014.
Joni's dedication to her students reached new heights when she faced a personal battle with cancer last year. Taking a leave of absence for treatment, the warmth of her return to the school was a testament to the impact she has had on her students and colleagues.
"When I returned from my leave last year for cancer treatment...the welcome back was very special," Joni reflected.
In 2022, Joni's commitment to education was recognized when she was nominated for the state teacher of the year, reaching the finals for ESD 189. The accolades underscored not only her individual achievements but also the standard of excellence she upholds in her role as an English teacher.
Beyond the school walls, Joni finds solace and joy in the equestrian world.
"Outside of school, I show horses with my daughter. Right now, we primarily show in ranch riding at quarter horse shows," she said.
Joni’s passion for horses goes hand in hand with her commitment to lifelong learning. Taking riding lessons one or twice a week, Joni is currently navigating the equestrian world with a 20-year-old horse.
“The two of us are still learning together,” Joni said.
As Joni looks toward the future, her professional goals include renewing her National Board certificate, something temporarily put on hold during her cancer treatment.
For students who look to her for guidance, Joni offers a simple yet powerful piece of advice: "Try."
That’s a mantra that perfectly summarizes her teaching philosophy.
What does Joni hope her students take away from their time in the Sedro-Woolley School District?
“That people love and care about them, and that the world is better because they are in it.”

Mary Purcell Elementary School invites the community to attend their sixth-grade "Family Heritage Night" in the Mary Purcell gymnasium on Thursday, January 11, from 6–7 p.m.
Students will be completing a family heritage poster board, a written report, have a food sample representing one part of their bloodline and will be displaying family heirlooms.
Audience members are invited to walk around, view the poster boards, ask students questions, sample food, etc.
The 57 sixth graders are excited to host this fabulous event for the first time since 2019!
Mary Purcell librarian Lisa Soneda will be building a replica of a colonial home on the stage as well!
