Get to know our incredible team in the “Meet our Staff” Monday series! We hope you enjoy getting to know the faces behind the scenes! #MeetOurStaffMonday #BehindTheScenes #EmployeeAppreciation #GetToKnowUs #SWSDStrongerTogether Meet Our Staff: Carrie Newby Carrie Newby currently holds the position of 6th-grade teacher at Central Elementary School. With five years of experience within the district, and 31 years total in education, she brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to her role. Born and raised here, she graduated from Sedro-Woolley High School in 1988. Contrary to her current path in education, as a 12-year-old in Mr. Fitzgerald's 6th-grade class, she envisioned herself pursuing a career in law. However, her aspirations evolved during high school, ultimately leading her to the field of education. Carrie holds a master's degree in education and is nationally board certified. She cherishes moments when former students approach her with fond memories of their time in her classes, underscoring the impact she has had on their lives. Last year, she received the honor of being named Central's Employee of the Year, a testament to her dedication and positive influence. Outside the classroom, she enjoys spending time outdoors and at her cabin in Danville. Carrie's passion lies in teaching and creating a safe space for students to feel a sense of belonging. Her professional goal is to conclude her career in her hometown, while leaving an enduring impact on the students she encounters. Her advice to students is simple: follow your dreams but always remember where you come from. For Carrie, Sedro-Woolley School District is more than an educational institution; it's a family. She hopes that every student takes away the understanding that the district will always be a place they can come back to, fostering a sense of belonging and community.

All schools will be closed today (Jan. 18, 2024) due to icy road conditions in some areas of the district. All field trips, activities, including athletic and other events, are canceled for the day. All outside user group events are also canceled when school is closed due to inclement weather.

Our transportation crew will begin assessing road conditions starting at 3:30 a.m. on Friday, January 19. If the roads are determined to be safe for travel, the district will not share any additional messaging via school messenger (autodial/text/email). However, we will share the information on the district’s live feed (https://www.swsd.k12.wa.us/live-feed), Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/SedroWoolleySchoolDistrict), and Instagram page (https://www.instagram.com/swsdcoms/), and we will proceed with school starting on time. You can also download the Apptegy app on your mobile device by scanning the QR code below and choose “Yes” to receive push notifications. Download App: https://apple.co/3pG1BRD https://bit.ly/44ni0cx If tomorrow morning’s assessment proves the roads traveled by our buses are still not in great shape, the district will implement a two-hour delay and communicate the decision through School Messenger as well as the channels identified above. Any delay would allow more time for both staff and students to arrive safely as temperatures rise throughout the morning. You can also download Flash Alert, which is the first place closure or delay information is sent. Media outlets use Flash Alert to feed their information tickers during newscasts. Sign up at https://www.flashalert.net and review your account each year to ensure that you continue to receive messages. We understand that these weather-related changes can be challenging, and we appreciate your continued patience. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we work together to ensure a safe learning environment for everyone.

We are gearing up for Friday’s cold temperatures (9° to 20°F) and would like to encourage families to be proactive as well. If the forecasted temperatures are correct, we will have indoor recesses at the elementary schools; middle school students will remain in the cafeteria during lunches. Please dress students in extra layers of outerwear, including jackets, hats, gloves, and extra socks, to keep them warm and comfortable during transitions between buildings or while they’re waiting for the bus. With a lot of young drivers at State Street and Sedro-Woolley High Schools, we also want to remind families to remind their teens to prioritize safety while driving to and from school, especially in potentially icy conditions. The district’s transportation team will also be checking road conditions before the first buses leave the bus garage at 6 a.m. If conditions warrant a two-hour late start, families will be notified via FlashAlert, Facebook, the District Website as well as School Messenger messages via email, text and voice.
