A community forum to meet the top candidates for the State Street High School principal position will be held at 3 p.m. March 13 in the Cascade Middle School library. This event is open to all staff, students, and families of State Street High School. During the forum, you will hear a brief presentation by the candidates, followed by a time for the audience to ask questions. Human Resources will facilitate the Q&A. Attendees will have an opportunity to provide written feedback after the presentations and Q&A. More information about this process will be provided at the start of the community forum. Beginning this summer, the state of Washington will provide grocery benefits through a program called Sun Bucks to help families with eligible school-age children buy groceries during the summer. Families will receive $120 per eligible child. Who is eligible? Families that qualify for Free or Reduced-price meal benefits for the 23-24 school year will be eligible to receive SUN Bucks. Who may qualify for F/R benefits for the 23-24 school year? Students that qualify for SNAP/FDPIR/TANF/etc. are automatically qualified for F/R benefits and are therefore automatically eligible for SUN Bucks. Families that have submitted the 2023–2024 Family Income Survey, and met the income guidelines provided on the survey, have qualified for F/R benefits. How can I submit a Family Income Survey? If you believe your family would qualify for F/R benefits based on the income guidelines provided on the 2023–2024 Family Income Survey, please submit the survey by visiting https://www.swsd.k12.wa.us/page/family-income-survey To be eligible for SUN Buck in the summer of 2024, please submit the survey by May 15, 2024. The surveys may be turned in at your child’s school or the Food Service Department, 780 Cook Road, Sedro-Woolley. Central, Evergreen, Mary Purcell and State Street families are invited to learn about the Title I program next Tuesday, March 12 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Central Elementary School in Room 201. Title I provides funding for additional help for Title I schools. At this meeting, we will talk about our Title I program and answer any questions you have. Staff will explain: • The Title I program and the regular curriculum. • How students are identified for the program. • The assessments used and what they mean. • The proficiency levels that Title I will help your child meet. • At-home activities to help your child succeed. • How you can be involved in the Title I program. We have an important update regarding the conclusion of the 2023-2024 school year. Due to an additional snow day that exceeded the two allocated make-up days (Feb. 16 and May 24), the school year will now conclude on Monday, June 17. As a result, the early release day initially planned for Friday, June 14, has been rescheduled to Monday, June 17. Therefore, Friday, June 14, will be a full-day for both students and staff. June 17 will be the early release. Thank you for your attention to this schedule change. At Sedro-Woolley High School, June 17 will be a blue block day. Johnson's childhood traversed from Sedro-Woolley to Chicago, then Federal Way, before circling back to Sedro-Woolley. Despite the geographical shifts, Sedro-Woolley remained a constant in her life, shaping her educational journey from Evergreen Elementary School to Sedro-Woolley High School. Johnson pursued her academic endeavors at Western Washington University, where she obtained a bachelor's degree in English, followed by a Master's in Teaching from Northwest University. Her commitment to excellence led her to achieve a National Boards certificate and become AVID trained. Despite initially considering law enforcement at the age of 12, Johnson found her calling in education, aligning her schedule with her children's needs. "I realized I didn't want shift work, but a schedule that more aligned with their schedules," she explains. One of Johnson's most cherished experiences revolves around her work with AVID students. “I taught my AVID students from their 9th grade year to 12th,” she said. “I wanted them to understand that no matter what their current goals were for after graduation, they could always change and to not limit themselves in high school because of that. Two years after one of these students graduated, their sibling delivered a message to me saying the past AVID student wanted me to know that what I said was so true. He planned on a career in the auto mechanic field wanting to go straight to work after high school, which he did. However, two years later he realized he actually wanted to further his education and the classes that he was pushed to take in high school assisted him in getting into the program he was seeking.” Outside the classroom, Johnson finds joy in various hobbies, including camping, fishing, antiquing and gardening. Her passion for travel mirrors her aspiration to explore the world's diverse landscapes and cultures. Looking ahead, Johnson is steadfast in her commitment to enhancing student engagement and relevance within her lessons. "My professional goals for the future are to set goals for increasing student engagement through interactive activities, discussions, and projects," she affirms. Among Johnson's favorite quotes is one from the Disney movie Pollyanna, reflecting her optimistic outlook on life: "There is something about everything that you can be glad about, if you keep hunting long enough to find it" (Eleanor H. Porter, Pollyanna). Her advice to students (Time flies — don't let it slip away. Enjoy every moment of every day and TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE TIME TEACHERS GIVE YOU TO GET YOUR WORK DONE!) underscores the value of time and the importance of seizing every opportunity to learn and grow. Johnson hopes Sedro-Woolley High School students depart with enduring friendships and cherished memories.
