PARKER NELSON has been named May Student of the Month for the Rotary Club of Sedro-Woolley. He is the son of Tony and Janá Nelson of Big Lake.
Parker maintains a 3.64 GPA while being actively involved in Sedro-Woolley High School. He has been a member of the SWHS Trap Shooting team 4 years in a row, lettering all 4 years. During this trap shooting season, he placed 1st for Sedro-Woolley and 2nd at Districts. Parker has participated 4 years on our Varsity Boys Soccer team, lettering all 4 years. He currently attends Skagit Valley College (SVC) as a Running Start student. Parker has earned an Academic Excellence award each quarter at SVC.
Outside of school, Parker enjoys spending time with his friends and family, hunting, fishing, working out, and being outside as much as the weather permits. He bucks hay in the summer along with doing landscaping work. Parker attained the rank of Eagle Scout at the age of 16, which is a continuing tradition as a fourth-generation Eagle Scout alongside his brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
After graduation, Parker will be attending Washington State University (WSU) to major in Mechanical Engineering. He will also be graduating from SVC this June, with a transferable Associate's Degree of Science, which will start him as a Junior at WSU. Congratulations Parker!


ZOEY BACUS has been named May Student of the Month for the Rotary Club of Sedro-Woolley. She is the daughter of Stacy Bacus of Sedro-Woolley.
Zoey maintains a 3.8 GPA while being actively involved in Sedro-Woolley High School. She has participated in Varsity Soccer all 4 years of high school, lettering each year, as well as holding the title of Team Captain 2 years in a row. She is a 2-year member of the National Honor Society. Zoey is currently enrolled in Northwest Career and Technical Academy for the medical science program, and upon completion, she will be a Certified Nursing Assistant.
Outside of school, Zoey enjoys spending time with her friends and family, playing soccer, being outside, and going to the lake. Zoey has previously worked at Tulip Town.
After graduation, Zoey plans to continue her education at Pacific Lutheran University. Her end game is to become a Registered Nurse. Congratulations Zoey!


GIBSON GRIFFIN has been named April Student of the Month for the Rotary Club of Sedro-Woolley. He is the son of Adam and Brandee Griffin of Mount Vernon.
Gibson maintains a 3.3 GPA while being actively involved in Sedro-Woolley High School. He has participated in baseball, basketball, tennis, and unified basketball. He has lettered 4 times in baseball, 3 times in tennis, and twice in basketball. Gibson was awarded Athlete of the Week by the Skagit Valley Herald for baseball. Gibson is a member of our Fellowship of Christian Athletes Club and is currently attending Northwest Career & Technical Academy part time, where he is studying the basics of firefighting.
Outside of school, Gibson enjoys hanging out with friends and family, playing ping pong, working out at the gym, training for baseball and camping. He currently holds a delivery driving position at Cascade Pizza and volunteers his free time for our Sedro-Woolley Little League, as an Umpire.
After graduation, Gibson will be attending Skagit Valley College to play baseball, and will study fire science. He hopes to work for the Mount Vernon Fire Department upon graduating from SVC. Congratulations Gibson!


RYLAN KONONEN has been named April Student of the Month for the Rotary Club of Sedro-Woolley. She is the daughter of Eldon and Gail Kononen of Sedro-Woolley.
Rylan maintains a 3.34 GPA while being actively involved in Sedro-Woolley High School. She has participated in softball and soccer all 4 years, earning a letter in each sport 4 years in a row. Rylan is a member of our Associated Student Body (ASB) and holds the position of Activities Coordinator this school year. Rylan was awarded a Leader in Sportsmanship Award for the Northwest Conference in 2023.
Outside of school, Rylan enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing softball, playing soccer, hiking, camping and playing with her dog. She has grown up participating in youth softball and soccer, and now spends her extra time helping coach these young athletes. Rylan currently works at Railroad Pub & Pizza as a server.
After graduation, Rylan will be attending Skagit Valley College to play softball, and will pursue a Business Management degree. Congratulations Rylan!

Tatyana Bortnik, a multilingual paraeducator, has been named Employee of the Year for the Sedro-Woolley School District's Multilingual Learning Program.
As a multilingual paraeducator serving Big Lake, Clear Lake, and Samish schools, Tatyana's primary role involves providing language academic support to multilingual students. She surpasses her job description by becoming a staunch advocate and interpreter for Russian and Ukrainian students and families within the district. Tatyana's commitment extends beyond the classroom as she offers her interpreting services during Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, parent evenings, and various school-related events, ensuring that these families are well-informed and supported within the school community.
Tatyana's reliability and exemplary performance are evident in her unwavering dedication to the Russian and Ukrainian community. She consistently demonstrates leadership by taking initiative in family engagement, ensuring that families have access to accurate information and essential resources. Tatyana's commitment to equity underscores her belief in providing equal opportunities and access to educational resources for all families within the district.
Her proactive approach to problem-solving and dedication to fostering a sense of inclusivity and support among the district's diverse communities make her an invaluable asset to the Sedro-Woolley School District. Tatyana's contributions not only enhance the educational experience of multilingual students but also promote understanding and appreciation of Sedro-Woolley schools within the broader community. The district is fortunate to have such a dedicated and compassionate professional like Tatyana Bortnik among its ranks.



Samish Elementary School’s Employee of the Year Award goes to Zoe Brunson, a special education teacher for first grade in the STRIVE program!
Zoe's commitment to her students, her passion for inclusion and innovative teaching methods set her apart. She consistently exceeds expectations by demonstrating flexibility and creativity in meeting the diverse needs of her students. She embodies the principle of "meeting students where they are at," fostering an inclusive learning environment for both students on Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and those in general education. Despite challenges, Zoe's approach yields measurable growth and results, evident in the data she collects. Zoe goes above and beyond, tirelessly working to create an inclusive environment for all students. She spearheaded the creation of the Samish Strive program, collaborating with the UW Haring Center to develop a model of inclusion from scratch.
Zoe showcased the Samish model of discipline referral at the Joint Discipline Committee, leveraging technology to streamline processes and enhance data collection. Her advocacy for her students and willingness to speak up in meetings underscore her dedication to their success. As a member of the Samish Ci3T leadership team and the Tier 2/Tier 3 Ci3T team, she ensures that all students are represented and supported.
She has taken the initiative to educate staff on working with neurodiverse students through an educational bulletin board. Zoe's advocacy for inclusion extends beyond the school walls; she has spoken passionately at school board meetings, advocating for the importance of inclusive education.
Zoe's impact extends beyond the classroom as she volunteers her time to support Sedro Woolley High School athletic events, showcasing her dedication to the broader school community.
Zoe epitomizes excellence in education, embodying reliability, leadership, and advocacy within the Sedro-Woolley School District. Her contributions have not only transformed the lives of her students but have also inspired others within the district to embrace the principles of inclusion and excellence.
