Learning is fun when it's a game! Third graders in Kellie Georgio's classroom at Samish Elementary School are diving into place values with games that bring a bit of friendly competition to math time.
🧮 Games like these help students grasp the importance of understanding place values—an essential building block for everything from adding and subtracting to solving more complex problems in the future.
By making math interactive and engaging, Georgio is helping students build a strong foundation that will serve them for years to come. Way to go, Samish third graders!

Today, Evergreen fourth graders shared a heartfelt tribute with our local heroes.
Lieutenant Bontrager, Firefighter Mintz, and Firefighter Wurtz from the Sedro-Woolley Fire Department visited Evergreen Elementary, where the students presented what they learned from the book, "The Man in the Red Bandana."
This moving story honors Welles Crowther, a young man who, on September 11, 2001, showed extraordinary courage in the face of unimaginable tragedy. As the South Tower of the World Trade Center burned, Welles, known as the man in the red bandana, made three trips back to the sky lobby on the 78th floor, rescuing countless people. His bravery that day, at just 24 years old, remains an example of the highest form of heroism.
One survivor, Judy Wein, said it best: “People can live 100 years and not have the compassion, the wherewithal to do what he did.”
As they learned about Welles Crowther, the fourth graders reflected on the importance of remembering 9/11 and the countless lives lost that day. To honor this hero and all the firefighters who risk their lives every day, the students shared words they felt describe these courageous individuals: “Awesome, Heroes, Saviors, Fantastic, Helpful, Handsome (to which the firefighters wholeheartedly agreed), Brave, Lifesavers, Courageous.”
At the end of the visit, the class presented "The Man in the Red Bandana," signed by all the students, to the firefighters. With gratitude, Lieutenant Bontrager thanked them, explaining that the entire department was wearing black bands on their badges today to honor the 343 firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on 9/11.
“We remember them in this way,” he said.
Today, our school community remembers the courage of all the heroes, past and present. Thank you to our local firefighters for your dedication, bravery, and service. May we never forget. #NeverForget #911 #FirstResponders #RedBandanaHero

Today, we honor the memory of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. We will never forget. #PatriotDay #NeverForget
