The Sedro-Woolley School District Outstanding Employee of the Year Award for the District Office goes to Public Information Officer Ruth Richardson.
Ruth goes above and beyond to ensure effective communication with the community. Her proactive approach to updating and engaging with the public through the district's social media platforms has been commendable.
Her swift action and genuine concern for the well-being of the community is especially evident on early snow days when she is up at the crack of dawn answering questions and posting information.
Ruth's background in journalism undoubtedly adds depth and expertise to her role, making her an invaluable asset to the district. She is also devoted to the Sedro-Woolley community. She has been a member of the Sedro-Woolley Rotary Club since 2005, and has been elected as the incoming president for the 2024-2025 Rotary year that begins July 1. She is also the current Vice President of Finance for the Washington School Public Relations Association and will serve as the VP-Finance elect, again, for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, assuming the VP position again in 2025-2026.

Sedro-Woolley High School will be hosting an innovative capstone project happening on June 10. In collaboration with the Sedro-Woolley Senior Center and the University of Washingtonβs Center for an Informed Public, 80 high school students will host "Leveling Up Seniors: a Media Mentorship Project."
This event will bring together high school students and senior citizens for an intergenerational exchange of skills and knowledge. The students will provide valuable digital literacy training to the seniors, helping them navigate the complexities of the digital world. In return, the senior citizens will share their wisdom by teaching the students various life skills, offering a rich exchange of experiences and learning.
An integral part of this project involves teaching students how to engage in meaningful face-to-face conversations with the seniors, a skill they will practice over a pizza lunch. Despite their proficiency in digital communication, many young people today struggle with in-person interaction. This event aims to bridge that gap by fostering genuine connections between the generations.
The high school is currently seeking local senior citizens who are interested in participating. Seniors of any age who are willing to engage in this enriching experience on June 10th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sedro-Woolley Community Center, are encouraged to join. Participants will also be asked to host a brief 5-minute lesson on a life skill or history topic, helping students to βlevel upβ in their understanding and appreciation of past generations.
Workshop development and support will be provided by the Central Skagit Library and the Sedro-Woolley Senior Center to ensure a smooth and productive event.
Interested seniors can sign up by emailing lkitchens@swsd101.org with their names and contact information.
This event promises to be a meaningful and memorable experience for all involved, fostering community connections and enhancing mutual understanding across generations.
