Sedro-Woolley High School students put their Career and Technical Education skills to the test yesterday at the 2026 Northwest Washington Construction Career Day in Lynden!

Twenty-five Cubs attended the hands-on event alongside instructors Preston Stankey and Dan Caldwell, where students explored careers in the construction industry through activities involving heavy equipment, construction trades, surveying, crane simulators, and more.

Our students made an impressive showing throughout the day, landing on many of the event leaderboards and earning cash prizes for their performance. Altogether, Sedro-Woolley students brought home $375 in prize money!

More importantly, the event gave students the opportunity to see how the skills they are learning in the classroom directly translate to real-world success. From operating equipment to completing trade-related challenges, students demonstrated the kind of knowledge and hands-on ability that can open doors to high-demand careers after graduation.

Students shared that one of their favorite parts of the day — besides being outside and participating in fun, hands-on activities — was seeing their success during the competitions and activities. Their strong performance reinforced that the skills they are building at Sedro-Woolley High School are preparing them for future careers in the trades.

We are proud of how our Cubs represented Sedro-Woolley High School and the strong Career and Technical Education programs available in our district!

Students in Family & Consumer Sciences classes at Sedro-Woolley High School took part in the “Bite of Reality” financial simulation on Wednesday, May 20, hosted by volunteers from WECU.

During the hands-on activity, students were assigned careers and monthly incomes, then visited stations representing real-life expenses like housing, groceries, transportation, childcare, entertainment, clothing, utilities and more. Students had to make budgeting decisions while also navigating unexpected “fickle finger of fate” moments, including surprise expenses like car repairs or wedding gifts.

Volunteers helped students think through important financial topics such as saving money, avoiding high-interest credit card debt and asking good questions to make informed financial decisions.

One of the biggest takeaways for many students? The surprisingly high costs of transportation and childcare in the real world.

The simulation gave students a valuable opportunity to practice real-world financial literacy skills in a fun and engaging way. Thank you to WECU and all of the volunteers who helped make this experience possible for our students! We also appreciated Washington state Sen. Keith Wagoner for stopping by to volunteer at the event.
