Sedro-Woolley School District is working with the Sedro-Woolley Police Department following the discovery of missing and potentially diluted student medications at multiple schools.

During a routine medication audit, district staff discovered missing medication at one school. The district immediately expanded its review to schools throughout the district and identified additional discrepancies, including missing medication and liquid medication that appeared to have been diluted.

The matter has been referred to the Sedro-Woolley Police Department for investigation.

"Families trust us to keep their children's medications safe, and we understand how deeply concerning this situation is," Superintendent Brett Greenwood said. "Our first priority is supporting affected students and families, and we are committed to understanding what happened and strengthening our safeguards."

The district has personally contacted families whose students' medications were identified as affected. As a precaution, the district is also not administering medication from the affected supplies and will be working with families to arrange replacement medications as needed.

The district will cover costs associated with replacing affected medications.

The district's routine medication audit procedures helped identify the initial discrepancies. District officials are reviewing medication storage, access, inventory and accountability procedures to determine what additional safeguards are necessary.

"We recognize the seriousness of the trust families place in us," Greenwood said. "We are deeply sorry for the concern and uncertainty this situation has created. We will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement and take steps to reduce the risk of something like this happening again."

Families who have concerns about medications stored at school are encouraged to contact their school principal to arrange a review with appropriate school staff.

Because this is an active law enforcement investigation involving confidential student and personnel information, the district will not release additional details at this time.
