Students explored local history through early photos and maps, learning about families like the Prevedells—whose descendants are still part of the Lyman community today. They also heard stories of early settlers, gold seekers heading toward Ruby Creek, and the town’s namesake, Lorenzo Lyman, a prospector who once called the area home.
They discovered how the Skagit River has shaped the town over time—washing away some of its earliest buildings through flooding and erosion—and learned about community leaders like Birdsey Minkler, who helped build the region through mills and public service.
Then came the hands-on fun:
🌾 Playing pioneer games with hoops and sticks
🧈 Churning butter by hand (and learning how cream becomes butter!)
✍️ Writing with ink using feather quills
🍓 Learning how to can jam—and even bringing a jar home
🐄 Trying their hand at “milking” a cow
🌱 Planting kale seeds in the school garden
From history lessons to hands-on experiences, Pioneer Day was a memorable way for students to connect with the roots of their community—no screens required.
Way to go, Lyman Elementary! 👏

Completed with the 2021–2026 Capital Project Levy
• Replaced exterior siding
Projects delayed due to inflationary cost increases
• Repair sinkholes in the asphalt parking area
Planned improvements if the replacement levy is approved
• 2032: Repair sinkholes in the asphalt parking area
In addition to site-specific projects, the proposed levy supports ongoing districtwide facility, safety, and technology needs that benefit all schools, including Lyman. These projects occur throughout the six-year levy period and are not tied to a single year or building.
• School Resource Officer support (in partnership with the City of Sedro-Woolley)
• Ongoing technology replacement and infrastructure support
• Security camera replacement and system maintenance
• Telephone system replacement
• Flooring replacement (carpet and tile)
• Student furniture replacement
• Exterior painting of district buildings
Planning note: Short-term levy projects are developed through the Citizens Advisory Committee based on facility maintenance data. Separate long-range facility planning examines district facility needs over the next 10–20 years.
