🌿🎨 A special first at Central Elementary School!

The Matt Mihelich Outdoor Classroom officially welcomed its first group of students on October 7!

Art and music teacher Mrs. Olberg took her Wednesday Club students outside for the very first learning experience in this special space.

What a wonderful way to bring learning beyond the classroom walls! We look forward to seeing all the ways Central students and staff will use this outdoor space for creativity, exploration and connection in the years ahead.

🎉 CENTRAL ELEMENTARY: A LOOK BACK AT 1938!

As Central Elementary prepares to celebrate its centennial, we continue to receive some incredible pieces of the school's history from former students and their families.

Corintha Taylor shared these treasures from her grandparents, Paul Slattery and Carlie Cole, who completed eighth grade at Central in 1938. Their diplomas, dated May 25, 1938, even feature an image of the school and were signed by Central Principal Mary Purcell.

Corintha also shared what she believes is a photo of Central's seventh- and eighth-grade classes from 1938. On the back, generations of names have been carefully handwritten — a reminder that every face in these old photographs represents a story and a connection to our community.

And here's another fascinating piece of Central history: eighth-grade graduation meant admission to high school! Both diplomas state that the students had completed the prescribed course of study for the grade school and were entitled to a diploma "and admission to the High School."

Thank you, Corintha, for helping us preserve and share this wonderful glimpse into Central nearly 90 years ago!

It is signed by Superintendent J.H. Muncaster, Principal Mary Purcell and members of the Board of Education.

100 Years of Memories at Central Elementary! ❤️

As we prepare to celebrate Central Elementary School's 100th anniversary, we're loving the memories being shared by former students!

Patti Henderson Baines, a member of the Sedro-Woolley High School Class of 1971, shared this photo of her sixth-grade class at Central during the 1964-65 school year with Mrs. Lovaas.

Patti remembers the lasting impact of teachers like Mrs. Patterson, Mrs. Schaffer and Mrs. Lovaas, who taught students to think critically, write in full sentences and navigate a library card catalog. She especially remembers the many happy hours she spent in Central's library, where her favorite books were the Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle series!

Now it's your turn to make some memories with us!

Join us for Central Elementary's Centennial Celebration on Saturday, October 3, from noon to 2 p.m. Enjoy self-guided tours of the school, special celebrations and ribbon-cutting ceremonies as we honor 100 years of learning, friendships and community.

Were you a Central student? Do you recognize anyone in this photo? We'd love to hear your memories in the comments!

Thank you, Patti, for sharing this wonderful piece of Central's history! ❤️

100 Years of Central School 🎉

Take a look back at Central School’s 1958–59 kindergarten class with teacher Mrs. Matsushita!

It was a historic school year. Alaska and Hawaii became the 49th and 50th states, and according to former Central student Judy Johnson, the class celebrated Hawaii’s statehood with their Hawaiian teacher. 🌺

Join us for the Central Centennial Celebration from noon to 2 p.m. October 3. The celebration will include a community open house and self-guided tours, giving former students, families and community members a chance to walk the halls and revisit Central.

🛠️ VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT CENTRAL ELEMENTARY

Central Elementary is hosting a volunteer workday from noon to 4 p.m. September 19 to continue work on Matt Mihelich’s Outdoor Classroom Memorial and prepare the school garden for the upcoming Central Centennial Celebration.

Volunteers will help remove and stack sod, spread gravel, and clean up the school garden. Whether you’re ready to dig, shovel or push a wheelbarrow — or would rather lend a hand tidying up the garden — there’s work for everyone!

Adults are encouraged to volunteer, especially those who knew and loved Matt and would like to help complete another step in this special memorial project. Older children who can work independently are welcome to attend with an adult.
