Kindergarten open houses will be the Tuesday and Thursday after Spring Break.
  • Kindergarten Registration

Online kindergarten registration for the 2023-2024 school year is now available. Parents should be prepared to upload high-quality images of their child’s birth certificate and immunization records to complete the registration process.

Children who will be 5 years old by Aug. 31, 2023 are eligible to be registered as incoming kindergarteners for next school year.

Open houses for Evergreen, Central and Mary Purcell Elementary Schools will be on April 11 from 5–7 p.m. Open houses for Big Lake, Clear Lake, Lyman and Samish Elementary Schools will be on April 13 from 5–7 p.m.

Although Foundations K and Good Beginnings students are automatically enrolled into their neighborhood elementary school, families should attend the open houses so they can sign up for kindergarten screening meetings, WA Kids meetings, and complete some additional registration paperwork required by their individual neighborhood schools.

Parents should bring copies of their child’s birth certificate and immunization records to complete the registration process if they attend an in-person open house.

    Kindergarten Early Entrance

Early Entrance Procedures Research on early entrance to school indicates that a few children are ready for school experience at an earlier age than the state uniform entry age of five by August 31. It is the belief of the Sedro-Woolley School District that there may be a need for exceptions to the policy on entrance age. A child whose fifth birthday falls on or after September 1 may be eligible for kindergarten enrollment if that child is developmentally ready to succeed in the program. Sedro-Woolley School District staff must assess early entrance candidates’ readiness. Students will be assessed and must meet age 5 years and 6 months age equivalencies in at least five areas; 1) concepts; 2) motor; 3) social development; 4) language; and 5) self-help readiness criteria as specified by the selected assessment tool.

The potential $100 fee for this assessment is the responsibility of the parents. An exemption can be made for families who are eligible for federal free or reduced meal status. Please ask about the special form necessary to qualify for this exemption.

Procedure Steps: 1. A Request for Waiver of Entry Requirements for Kindergarten (Form 3110F) should be delivered to the principal of the student’s home school along with proof of birth date. For spring assessment, parents need to submit their request by the first Friday in June. For families moving into the district after the deadline, parents need to submit their request for assessment by the third Monday in August. 2. The parents shall meet with a school representative for an interview and a review of the early entrance procedures. 3. Child will be assessed by district staff using the selected assessment tool. 4. Family will be notified within ten (10) working days following the early entrance assessment. 5. Appeals of the placement decision are to be directed to the principal of the child’s home school.
