Welcome to Sedro-Woolley School District's website on reading.
While keeping our focus on expert quality instruction of the Core components of our reading program, teachers will also work to differentiate instruction within their classroom to target the needs of each individual student.
The districts in the state of WA are working through the second year of a 4-year transition plan to adopt the new Common Core State Standards in English/ Language Arts. The new standards will bring six major shifts in reading/writing instruction in our schools. Sedro-Woolley School District has as its focus this year two of those major shifts. Teachers will include writing within the 90 minute reading block, and that writing will be largely text-based. This means students will become proficient at providing evidence, or proof, from the text they are reading to back up their responses to questions or the opinions or arguments asserted in their writing. These are important shifts at every grade level with the ultimate goal being that students will be career and/or college ready by the time they are graduated from high school.
